One Month Notice for Marriage in Queensland

Australian marriage law requires at least one calendar month's notice before marriage. Learn how the rule works in Queensland.

Australian marriage law requires at least one calendar month between giving your Notice of Intended Marriage and the date of the marriage.

This is one of the main rules that controls how quickly you can get married in Townsville or anywhere else in Queensland.

The Rule in Plain English

Your NOIM must be given to the celebrant:

  • at least one calendar month before the marriage
  • no more than 18 months before the marriage

Easy Example

If the celebrant receives your NOIM on 10 April, the earliest ordinary marriage date is 10 May.

It is a calendar month rule, not a 30-day rule.

Why This Matters

Many couples think the ceremony itself is the hard part. Usually it is not.

The ceremony can be very short. The notice period is what usually controls the timeline.

Can the Rule Be Waived?

Only if a prescribed authority grants a shortening of time.

That is:

  • not automatic
  • not something the celebrant can approve
  • not available just because you would prefer an earlier date

Townsville Practical Tip

If you are planning around:

  • interstate family travel
  • Defence or FIFO schedules
  • visa timing
  • wet season travel
  • Magnetic Island accommodation or ferry plans

then it is usually worth lodging the NOIM as early as you sensibly can.
